Watts, California—On Saturday, September 14, Edwin Markham Middle School and Community Healing Gardens opened its backyard to the community for a free event, “Veggies & Vehicles.” The program brings together a myriad of activities to celebrate nature, the environment and clean energy solutions. Event partners included: Community Healing Gardens, Watts Clean Air and Energy Committee, the Sierra Club and Green Commuter who have joined together to offer electric vehicle ride-and-drives for licensed drivers. Several giveaways and take-home gifts were available for attendees, including: Veggies & Vehicles tee-shirts, seedlings, eco-friendly cleaning products giveaway from ECOS, and healthy fare from EVERYTABLE. Many of the participating organizations are part of Watts Rising, a multiyear grant focused on affordable housing and environmental initiatives in Watts.
Watts Neighborhood Council was excited to help with outreach for this hands on program featuring multiple green activities for all ages including kid-friendly gardening and tree care advice, a solar-power demonstration and electric vehicle test drives.
