On Wednesday morning February 20, 2019, Councilmember Buscaino’s Watts District Office began a massive lot clearing effort adjacent to 1650 E 109th St and the train tracks in Watts. This lot was being used as an illegal dwelling and junkyard without the consent of the property owner. As of day three of the clean-up, the team has already towed over 40 vehicles including RVs and has recycled over 400 tires. The team also cleared over 120 tons of trash and debris so far. The clean up will be continuing into next week. This joint effort was arranged by the Councilmember’s office and would not have been possible without the support and assistance of the Los Angeles City Attorney, Los Angeles Police Department, Bureau of Street Services, Bureau of Sanitation, Department of Building and Safety, Los Angeles County Fire Health Hazardous Materials Division and organizations such as SA Recycling and Los Angeles Conservation Corps.
Councilmember Buscaino’s staff is working with the property owner to convert this lot into a community garden.
